Achieving better health for the future
BCBSOK helps the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic program expand to provide on-site prescription education and assistance.
Medication adherence, or taking your medicine as directed, is an important part of health care. It can help to prevent or lessen severe health conditions that can affect individuals and their pocketbooks.
For the Central Oklahoma American Indian Health Council, helping patients have access to medication and the knowledge of how to use it is important focus for its Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) program. Thanks in part to a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK), a pharmacy expansion will offer clinic patients an on-site pharmacy staffed with knowledgeable individuals who can counsel patients on their medications.
Pharmacists will help the patients understand the medicines they are prescribed and their side effects right after seeing the doctor who has ordered the prescription. This will improve patients’ overall health and reduce total health costs.
This state-of-the-art facility can fill more than 400,000 prescriptions a year, hold educational seminars and provide confidential patient consultation. The pharmacy will also include two convenient drive-through windows.
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic held it’s Pharmacy Groundbreaking Ceremony on April 7. The pharmacy staff currently works in a 900-square-foot workspace, but will be expanding to a 7,000-square-foot work area with this new project.
Through a patient-centered medical home model, the pharmacy offers medication reconciliation and counseling, medication therapy management, compounding services and patient medication assistance. OKCIC also has a system designed to catch medication errors and identify needed interventions. Pharmacists will help the patients understand the medicines they are prescribed and their side effects right after seeing the doctor who has ordered the prescription. This will improve patients’ overall health and reduce total health costs.
BCBSOK’s support is essential in helping the pharmacy achieve better health outcomes for Oklahomans.
